Dr Thandi Mgwebi named new Walter Sisulu University head

Walter Sisulu University named Dr Thandi Mgwebi its next Vice-Chancellor and Principal effective January 1, 2026. University council chair Prof Tembeka Ngcukaitobi announced her appointment after a competitive selection process. Mgwebi succeeds Prof Rushiella Songca and returns to her alma mater, where she earned her undergraduate degree before it became part of WSU. She currently leads business advancement at the National Research Foundation.

Mgwebi brings twenty years of higher education leadership, including executive roles at Nelson Mandela University and Tshwane University of Technology. Her career focuses on research development, international collaborations, and promoting gender equity in academic appointments. She holds a PhD in medical cell biology from the University of Cape Town and management credentials from global institutions. University representatives expressed confidence that her expertise will enhance WSU's research output and community engagement across Eastern Cape rural communities.
