Drake, Kendrick Lamar could face off in UMG defamation trial

Drake initiated legal proceedings against Universal Music Group in January 2025 over defamation claims. The artist alleges the record label promoted Kendrick Lamar's track through unlawful methods. Lamar's song contains accusations labeling Drake as a predator of children. Universal Music Group representatives reject these allegations completely. Company lawyers assert Drake provoked a musical conflict and lost the competition.

Court proceedings advanced significantly on July 14th when both parties presented witness documentation. Drake's legal team compiled a comprehensive list containing 63 potential witnesses from various streaming services and executive personnel. Universal Music Group submitted a smaller roster of nine individuals for testimony. The record company designated both rappers as possible witnesses for the case. Representatives argue that Lamar possesses relevant information about the song's creation and promotional activities.

Neither performer has issued public statements regarding these recent legal developments. The case continues through federal court proceedings.
