Duale preps anti fraud cops to hunt down health quacks

The Ministry of Health is launching an anti-fraud police unit to crush the surge of unlicensed and untrained people running bogus health services across Kenya. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the nationwide crackdown will hit fake clinics and medics, with the special police unit deploying alongside Kenya Medical Practitioners Council officials to enforce required standards. He warned quack doctors and unlicensed healthcare practitioners to find somewhere else to run their scam operations.

The Ministry will digitize the healthcare system from a central dashboard covering all licensed dentists, physicians, and pharmacies while tracking those operating illegally. Duale noted the law is crystal clear that you can't run a health clinic without the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council licensing. He's forming a multi-agency task force and boosting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council's budget.

The move follows a patient named Amos Isoka dying from complications after a botched tooth extraction at a quack dentist in Kawangware two weeks ago. Isoka passed away at Kenyatta National Hospital while receiving treatment after developing severe swelling of the neck, tongue, and chest. Duale said he'll direct KNH to waive all bills for the late brother who got mishandled through the quack doctor, the same way they handle people injured during protests or other events.

A new regulatory framework called the scope of practice will get instituted to ensure only trained practitioners perform medical procedures. Duale noted every health worker will only treat patients based on what they studied in college, with no more grey areas once they launch the Scope of Practice. DCI detectives returned to the illegal clinic in Kawangware, hunting for evidence to support their investigation.

Police seized laboratory equipment, assorted drugs, and an identification card bearing the name Lowrence King'atua Kamau. A manhunt is underway to grab the suspects still at large.
