Dublin Leads in Residential Electricity Consumption with 19% of National Total

Irish households used more electricity during 2024 across every county. Dublin areas consumed the most power at 19 percent of all residential usage. Cork came second with 12 percent followed closely by Dublin County and Galway at 6 percent each. Kildare rounded out the top five counties with 5 percent consumption. The Central Statistics Office tracked these numbers through smart meters across Ireland.

Dublin 15 led all postal districts with 10 percent of residential electricity usage. Dublin 24 and Dublin 18 followed with 9 percent and 6.5 percent respectively. Dublin 2 used the least electricity at just 1.9 percent of the total. Weather patterns and home energy ratings affect how much power people use each year. Data centers consumed 22 percent of all electricity nationwide during 2024.

Electric vehicle charging stations saw massive growth with 43 percent more usage than 2023. Smart meters reached 1.9 million homes representing 83 percent of all residential properties. Rural areas used 3 percent more electricity compared to urban areas which jumped 5 percent. Counties near Dublin experienced the biggest increases in new electrical connections. Ireland continues expanding its electrical grid to meet growing demand from homes and businesses.
