Duma Boko unveiled Mmamatlakala bus tragedy memorial

Botswana's president just dropped a permanent memorial for the Mmamatlakala bus crash victims, and the whole thing hit way harder than any government ceremony should. Duma Gideon Boko and First Lady Kaone Tumalano Boko personally led the tombstone dedication for St Engenas Zion Christian Church members killed in that 2024 wreck, all under the National Healing, Remembrance and Closure Programme.

And look, the man didn't just read some stiff prepared remarks. Boko talked about holding onto laughter, cherishing memories, and leaning on faith when the grief gets unbearable. He made it clear the government intends to keep walking beside these families long after the cameras leave, which honestly hits different when a head of state actually says it out loud.

The whole gathering pulled in church members, bereaved relatives, and regular citizens from across the country, which gave it way more of a communal vigil energy than a stiff state function. Those tombstones aren't just carved rock. They're a permanent promise that those lives mattered, and future generations will have a physical spot to process what happened.
