ECB apologizes for off-color Ashes post about Pope

The cricket leaders from England and Wales apologized for making a joke about Pope Francis online. They posted a comment pretending the Pope was a fan of their famous cricket tournament, The Ashes. Their joke came right after the Pope shared something serious about Ash Wednesday religious customs. They quickly erased what they wrote and admitted they messed up.

The 88-year-old Pope, who has stayed in a hospital since February, had just shared important thoughts about what ashes mean to Catholics. He explained how ashes help people remember they are human and should stay humble. His message described how ashes wash away self-importance and bring people back down to earth. He talked about how everyone walks the same path through life together.

The cricket folks answered this meaningful religious message by joking that even the Pope loves their cricket games. After taking down their comment, someone speaking for the cricket group expressed how sorry they felt for hurting their feelings. Ash Wednesday kicks off the Lent season, which stretches across 40 days when Christians prepare for Easter.
