Edo Gov questions contractor over slow road projects

The Edo State Government plans to question a road project contractor next Monday over claims of slow progress and subpar work. Governor Monday Okpebholo shared this news during a surprise visit to check ongoing road projects throughout Benin City. He seemed unhappy with several contractors handling different road jobs across the state. The Governor mentioned these projects weren't meeting proper contract standards.

The Governor hinted he might cancel the agreement completely. He also threatened to take away contracts from other builders because they reportedly missed government targets and failed to follow required specifications. "We visited several sites and felt disappointed with what we found, as many contractors aren't hitting our targets or following job specifications. We'll cancel those contracts," he stated.

"I feel frustrated with the work from one contractor on our payroll, and we'll bring him in Monday for talks. You might hear some bad news later because their current approach doesn't match how contract work should happen," Okpebholo explained. He believes these regular project checks help the government identify who works hard versus who takes projects lightly.

"We stay alert. We travel around the State checking all projects currently happening to make sure they deliver quality results. We also ensure contractors follow exact specifications," he added. The Governor expressed happiness with how fast workers built the first flyover bridge in Edo State, saying they would finish the project within 18 months.

"Regarding the Ramat Park flyover, the contractor performs well, and I like the speed they've shown on the job. If they keep up this pace, they should complete construction right when planned. The materials used - like the iron and others - meet high-quality standards," he noted. The Governor said his administration wants to create lasting improvements for citizens and fulfill every promise made to the Edo people.

"We'll keep inspecting every project to pressure contractors into delivering excellent work according to exact plans that benefit Edo people," Okpebholo promised. His inspection tour included Uteh Temboga Road, open drainage at Upper Ekenhua Road across from the Nigerian Army cantonment, Upper Ekenhua Road itself, and Catholic Charismatic Renewal Road in Ugbiyoko.
