Egypt hails Seoul ties as Korean giants pour billions into Cairo smart city

Egyptian Ambassador Khaled Abdel Rahman praised Korean development partnerships during Friday's celebration of his nation's 73rd National Day in Seoul. The July 23 commemoration honors the 1952 revolution that ended monarchical rule and established modern Egypt. Rahman emphasized how Korean investments support Egypt's Vision 2030 development framework. The ambassador highlighted collaborations with KOTRA, KOICA, and Korea's Export-Import Bank across green energy, digital transformation, and rural development sectors. These partnerships strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Egypt advances construction of a massive $59 billion smart city project east of Cairo featuring artificial intelligence and sustainable transportation systems. Korean corporations such as Samsung, LG, Hyundai Rotem, KHNP, and Doosan contribute investments ranging from metro infrastructure to nuclear power facilities. Rahman expressed appreciation for these technological partnerships that align with Egyptian modernization goals. The new urban development represents a significant milestone in Egypt's national transformation agenda. Advanced automation and internet connectivity will define this futuristic metropolitan area.

Diplomatic relations between Egypt and Korea began on April 13, 1995, and have expanded into comprehensive cooperation. Korean Ambassador for International Cyber Cooperation Lee Tae-woo noted bilateral trade growth from $500 million in 1995 to over $3 billion by 2023. High-level visits by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in 2016 and former Korean President Moon Jae-in in 2022 strengthened ties. Lee shared an Arabic proverb about choosing friends before paths. The celebration attracted diplomatic corps members, embassy staff, foreign residents, business executives, and media representatives.
