Eid Feast Oil Overload Could Torch Your Home

Nigeria's fire chief warned Muslims about kitchen safety during Eid al-Adha celebrations. Federal Fire Service Controller General Abdulganiyu Jaji told families to avoid filling cooking pans more than one-third with oil. He said festival cooking causes most home fires because families prepare larger meals at unusual times. Muslim women who handle traditional cooking duties need extra caution during the holiday period. Kitchen fires spike during religious celebrations when people cook unfamiliar amounts of food.

Jaji recommended families buy fire extinguishers, fire blankets and smoke detectors for their homes. He reminded people to turn off stoves and electrical devices before leaving their houses. Animal roasting should happen outside rather than inside kitchens or covered areas. Gas containers must stay outside kitchen spaces at all times for safety reasons. Parents should keep children away from open flames and matches during meal preparation.

The fire chief also addressed travel dangers during the holiday season. Truck drivers should reduce speed and follow traffic laws to prevent deadly crashes. Boat operators must check water levels and avoid putting too many passengers on vessels. Fatal water accidents often happen during busy holiday periods when boats carry excess weight. Emergency responders stay ready but prefer preventing accidents over responding to disasters.
