Zimbabwe's Central Mechanical Equipment Department has expanded its electric vehicle fleet to 33 units following the acquisition of 16 new battery-powered buses destined for urban transit operations. Transport Minister Felix Mhona announced that service will launch between the University of Zimbabwe campus and the capital's downtown area, with operations beginning next month as part of efforts to modernize public transportation while reducing emissions.
The state-owned entity has integrated smaller electric models into its EasyGo rental and travel division, which already operates airport shuttles and driving school vehicles. Authorities have directed CMED to evaluate the viability of converting the entire urban commuter network to electric propulsion, a transition expected to lower operating expenses and passenger fares compared with diesel-powered alternatives. BYD supplied both the vehicles and the charging equipment installed at CMED's Harare facility.
