Elon Musk admits his $17B Starlink deal is useless for two years

SpaceX acquired spectrum worth $17 billion from EchoStar during a recent transaction that will enable satellite-to-phone connectivity. Musk explained during the All-In Podcast Summit that smartphone manufacturers must modify chipsets to support these new frequencies. The integration process requires approximately two years before compatible devices reach consumers. Simultaneously, SpaceX must construct satellites capable of operating on the purchased spectrum bands. The company plans to create a comprehensive service combining home antenna systems with direct cellular communication.

The acquisition will not eliminate traditional telecommunications carriers from the market, according to Musk. Existing providers maintain substantial spectrum holdings that ensure their continued operations. SpaceX intends to offer services similar to current cellular plans while providing enhanced connectivity options.

Starship development continues with third-generation rockets featuring Raptor 3 engines and complete redesigns. The new version targets fully reusable capabilities exceeding 100 tons to orbit by 2026. Heat shield technology remains the primary engineering challenge, requiring thousands of tiles that function without individual inspection after each flight.
