Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa in Angola for 50th independence anniversary

President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa will attend celebrations in Angola marking five decades since the nation gained independence from Portugal in 1975. Zimbabwe's Ambassador to Angola, Thando Madzvamuse, confirmed that Mnangagwa joins other regional leaders honoring Angola's liberation anniversary, noting that approximately 400 Zimbabwean fighters are buried in the country after losing their lives during the collaborative independence struggles. Angola provided bases for Zimbabwean liberation forces immediately following its own freedom.

Angolan President Joao Lourenco described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on national achievements and obstacles encountered over half a century of self-governance. Both nations belong to the Southern African Development Community and the African Union, with Lourenco currently chairing the continental organization. Vice President Kembo Mohadi visited Angolan liberation sites two months earlier to pay respects at memorial locations where fallen freedom fighters rest.
