Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa urges the ZDF to maintain discipline

Zimbabwe's military leadership underwent a formal transition as President Mnangagwa inducted General Emmanuel Matatu as the new defense forces commander while retiring General Phillip Valerio Sibanda after five decades of service. Matatu received a promotion from lieutenant general during ceremonies at Charles Gumbo Barracks, with the head of state emphasizing that institutional mission transcends personnel changes.

Mnangagwa praised Sibanda's distinguished record spanning the liberation era through multiple peacekeeping assignments, from intelligence positions in ZIPRA through UN observer duties in Angola and SADC operations in Congo. The outgoing commander held top military posts for seven years, working directly with the president.

The commander in chief urged continuity in defense programs and called on service members to extend identical professionalism to the incoming leadership that characterized previous command relationships, stressing discipline as fundamental to operational effectiveness.
