A community garden named after a local figure is already making money. The Omutize Dr Gerson Kunomundu Katjirua garden in Epukiro, run by the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority, turned a five-thousand-dollar profit from its first harvest. Councilor Kotoree Kaukuata, handling the project's marketing, said this shows they are on the right path for food security and self-sufficiency.
The one and a half hectare plot started operations last year. They sold their initial produce at a local permit day event. Current crops include carrots, onions, watermelons, and sweet potatoes. Plans exist to expand with potatoes, tomatoes, butternuts, beans, and maize later. The project has also donated food for funerals and to marginalized groups in the Epukiro constituency, with hopes to assist schools and more needy communities later. It employs eleven temporary workers now, aiming for seven full-time positions next year. Kaukuata expressed happiness with the progress, noting they deposited a portion of the earnings with the traditional authority and will focus on becoming self-sustainable.
