Essien stays at FC Nordsjælland as assistant coach on a two-year deal

FC Nordsjælland extended Michael Essien's contract for two more years as assistant coach. The Danish club made this decision before his current agreement expired. Essien will continue working with the team's coaching staff for the upcoming season. The 42-year-old former midfielder has become an important part of their technical setup. Club officials want to keep his expertise and experience.

Essien first joined the team as both player and coach several years ago. The club moved him to a full coaching role on September 9, 2020. He has earned his UEFA A coaching license during his time there. The former international also completed a UEFA course about football management and organization. These qualifications have made him more valuable as a coach.

The Ghana native played 59 matches for his country during his career. He represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups during 2006 and 2014. His playing career took him to many famous clubs around the world. Essien competed for teams like Bastia, Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung and Sabail. He turned down a chance to coach Ghana's national team last year and chose to stay with his current job.
