Ex-MP says 220 former MMDCEs reckless to back Bawumia

Dickson Adomako Kissi criticized former local government officials for supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia publicly. The former Anyaa Sowutuom lawmaker called their move politically unwise. He spoke Tuesday on Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily program. Adomako Kissi said the endorsement could hurt their chances of joining the party's voting system. The timing was particularly bad for these officials.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong has been pushing to add former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to the electoral register. Adomako Kissi warned that open support for one candidate weakens their case for inclusion. He called the public declaration shortsighted and poorly timed. The party needs unity after losing the 2024 elections. Such moves create more divisions during rebuilding efforts.

Public endorsements carry little electoral weight and often backfire, Adomako Kissi explained. He said smart politicians worry when people openly support them. The party needs cohesion to move forward successfully. Early declarations do not guarantee actual votes. Building consensus matters more than public shows of support.

The endorsement happened Monday at Accra's Alisa Hotel. A group of 220 former local officials formed the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia. They pledged to help him win both the NPP primaries and 2028 general elections. The group claimed their support was based on practical commitment. Their announcement drew immediate criticism from party members.

Adomako Kissi joined other voices warning against early endorsements and factional politics. The NPP faces January 2026 primaries for choosing their presidential candidate.
