Ex-NLA manager defends KGL deal, calls claims legally flawed

A former National Lottery Authority communications manager defended the agency's deal with a private firm. Razak Kojo Opoku pushed back against claims from an investigative outlet and its reporter, Sulemana Briamah. He called their allegations about the NLA arrangement with KGL Technology Limited legally mistaken. Opoku stated the company only sells lottery tickets online under a proper license, while the NLA alone runs the actual game draws.

He argued the relevant law separates conducting the lotto from retailing it. The rules about commissions and payments were written for physical kiosk operations, not fully fitting digital platforms. Opoku said blaming KGL for the NLA's old financial problems is wrong. He cited data showing the authority's funding issues and unpaid debts existed years before KGL started. Since 2019, the company has paid over five hundred million Ghana cedis to the NLA. Opoku questioned how KGL could be responsible if that money was not forwarded to state funds. He expressed trust that Attorney General Dominic Ayine, who sits on the lottery board, would give advice based only on national interest, warning against any pressure on the official.
