Expert John Chunda decries the MBC-Mumba affair

Governance expert John Chunda has criticized the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation for providing media coverage to Vitumbiko Mumba following the recent cabinet dissolution. Mumba previously served as Lazarus Chakwera's running mate during last Tuesday's electoral contest. Chunda argues that MBC management should deny access to individuals who lack official government positions. The expert emphasizes that taxpayer-funded public broadcasters must maintain impartial operations. He believes the corporation currently serves personal interests rather than the collective needs of Malawians.

Civil society organizations and political stakeholders express growing concerns about state media neutrality after media houses signed an electoral code of conduct before the September 16 polls. MBC Director General George Kasakula and Mumba failed to respond to requests for comment. Governance expert Charles Govati stated on Facebook that polling center results were properly counted and sealed with monitors present. Govati criticized MCP officials for what he termed immature behavior and accused Mumba of misleading party supporters. He recommended that any electoral irregularities should have been reported at individual polling stations where witnesses observed the process.
