India's enterprise artificial intelligence sector has reached a critical threshold, with 47 percent of companies operating multiple generative AI applications in live environments and another 23 percent conducting pilot programs, according to a joint study by EY and the Confederation of Indian Industry. The research reveals that 76 percent of business leaders anticipate substantial business impact from generative AI, while 63 percent consider themselves prepared to deploy the technology effectively.
Despite this optimism, financial commitment remains limited, as more than 95 percent of organizations dedicate less than one-fifth of their IT budgets to AI and machine learning investments. Mahesh Makhija from EY India noted that corporate entities have progressed beyond experimental phases, emphasizing the need to develop frameworks where human workers and AI systems operate collaboratively.
Looking ahead over the next year, companies plan to concentrate generative AI spending on operations, customer service, and marketing functions. Chandrajit Banerjee from CII highlighted that successful integration of this technology into India's economic framework could significantly enhance the nation's development trajectory, with 91 percent of executives citing rapid deployment as the primary consideration when deciding between purchasing and developing AI solutions internally.
