Faki Leaves Amid Drama as AU Preps New Power Battle

The leader of the African Union, Mr. Moussa Faki, said goodbye at a meeting on Wednesday. He has helped lead Africa for many years, and someone new will take his place soon. Three people want to become the next leader, and everyone will vote on Saturday in Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa.

Mr. Faki felt very emotional about leaving his job. He told everyone at the meeting that he would finish his work on time and leave when he needed to. Leaders can only work in this job for eight years, and Mr. Faki has finished his time.

Important people from many African countries came to Ethiopia for a big meeting. These people help make decisions for their countries. Three people want to be the new leader: Mr. Youssouf from Djibouti, Mr. Odinga from Kenya, and Mr. Randriamandrato from Madagascar. Mr. Mudavadi went to the meeting to speak for Kenya.

The meeting lasted two days. The people there needed to pick new leaders for different jobs, such as farming, money matters, schools, building things, peace, and health. Everyone at the meeting stopped to remember Mr. Sam Nujoma, who helped make Namibia a free country. Mr. Nujoma was very important because he fought against the unfair treatment of people. He became Namibia's first president and worked from 1990 to 2005. He passed away on February 8, 2025.

Mr. Claver Gatete, who works for the United Nations in Africa, said Mr. Faki did a great job as a leader. The meeting talked about making things right for African people and people with African families who live in other places.
