A search team just found a family who went missing at Tsavo East National Park. They stayed lost for 24 hours before help came.
The Kenya Wildlife Service told everyone on Tuesday that they spotted the family from the air. A pilot with Tsavo Trust located these four people near Kabaguchi Ranger Camp on the Yatta Plateau, about 50 kilometers away from where the family planned to go. The pilot landed right away and checked that nobody had any injuries. Everyone stayed healthy during their scary adventure. Teams from KWS and Tsavo Trust worked together to bring the family back safely.
The family—two parents and their kids—first drove into the park last Saturday evening through Manyani Gate. They wanted to spend two nights camping at Luggards Falls Special Campsite. Their plan was to leave through Sala Gate by Monday night. Park rangers started looking for them when they missed their 8 p.m. checkout time.
Rangers believe the family drove off their allowed path during their safari trip. Their car helped save them because they smartly stayed with their vehicle instead of wandering away. This choice made finding them much easier for the search teams flying above.
Medical staff checked the family after the rescue to make sure everyone remained healthy. They will soon meet up with their worried relatives. Park officials plan to ask more questions later about how exactly they became lost. KWS praised all the people who helped find the missing family and promised to keep these emergency plans ready for future problems.
