Serbia's Marko Đurić eyes Ghana's lithium with 24-hour economy praise

Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić praised Ghana's 24-hour economy initiative during meetings with Ghanaian officials in Accra. The visiting diplomat described the policy as visionary and capable of significantly accelerating national development. Đurić highlighted Serbia's economic achievements, including a doubling of its gross domestic product and a reduction in unemployment from nearly 20 percent to below seven percent. Both nations identified opportunities for enhanced cooperation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, artificial intelligence, and clean energy development.

Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, welcomed the Serbian endorsement of the continuous operation framework designed to boost productivity and reduce youth unemployment. The ministers acknowledged that current trade volumes remain disappointing despite strong diplomatic relationships spanning decades. They committed to expanding partnerships in biotechnology, mining, maritime security, and educational exchanges. Lithium exploration and processing have emerged as priority collaboration areas, as both countries possess significant deposits of the critical mineral.

The four-day visit includes meetings with parliamentary leadership and various cabinet ministers. Officials expect to sign multiple memoranda of understanding covering labor mobility, defense cooperation, and educational partnerships. Serbia currently chairs the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence and offers expertise in agricultural technology that could benefit Ghana's food security objectives.
