Mthuli Ncube pitches 24 hour economy for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube advocates for round-the-clock economic operations during the recent Zimbabwe Economic Development Conference held in Bulawayo. The minister criticizes the nation's traditional eight-hour work schedule, where employees depart offices by 4:30 PM after starting at 8 AM with extended lunch periods. He argues this approach prevents the country from maximizing economic output and productivity levels. Ncube emphasizes that substantial electrical power remains unused during nighttime hours when domestic consumption decreases significantly. The minister believes industries should capitalize on this available energy surplus to expand operations and create additional work shifts.

Informal night markets already demonstrate public support for extended trading hours across Bulawayo, Harare, and Gweru. Vendors earn approximately $50 nightly selling goods to bus passengers while taxi drivers benefit from increased customer demand. Sports officials welcome the proposal, particularly for evening matches under artificial lighting. However, reliable power infrastructure remains essential for the successful implementation of any extended economic model.
