Feds threaten hospitals over trans care funding

Federal health officials are moving to financially cripple hospitals that provide gender affirming care to minors. The Trump administration's Health and Human Services department introduced new rules. These proposals would cut off all Medicare and Medicaid money for any hospital or doctor offering this care to transgender youth. One rule specifically targets Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, blocking coverage for patients under eighteen or nineteen.

The goal is to force providers into an impossible choice, losing essential federal funding or stopping treatment. This would happen even in states where such care remains legal. Over two dozen states already ban or restrict this practice. The rules follow an executive order from Trump directing agencies to withhold money from hospitals providing these treatments.

This push coincides with legislative efforts. House Republicans just passed a bill that would criminalize providing this care to minors, with potential prison time. Another bill from Representative Dan Crenshaw aims to ban Medicaid coverage for it entirely for youth. Critics argue the funding rules would make it nearly impossible for hospitals to function while offering these services.
