Fertility clinic bombing suspect dies in Los Angeles federal jail

A Washington man accused of helping a bomber died Tuesday at a federal jail in Los Angeles. Daniel Jongyon Park was 32 years old and came from Kent, Washington. Guards found him unconscious in his cell around 7:30 a.m. Staff tried to save his life but could not help him. Doctors declared him dead at a nearby hospital.

Federal agents are looking into how Park died. The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service want to learn what happened. Officials have not said what caused his death. No other details about the incident have been released. The investigation continues at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Park faced charges for giving bomb materials to Guy Edward Bartkus. Bartkus attacked the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic on May 17. The blast hurt several people and killed Bartkus. Park left the country after the bombing and went to Poland. Polish officials sent him back to America to face trial.

Authorities arrested Park on June 4 when he landed at Kennedy Airport in New York. Officials moved him to the Los Angeles jail on June 13. Attorney General Pam Bondi praised Poland for returning Park to face justice. She called the clinic attack a cruel crime against women and mothers.

Prosecutors say Park gave Bartkus 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate. This chemical helps make powerful explosives. Both men believed people should not be born without agreeing first. The Justice Department says they shared these anti-birth beliefs.
