FIFA dumps real players for mascots in bizarre new Heroes game

FIFA has announced its first major game since ending its partnership with EA Sports. The organization revealed FIFA Heroes, a mascot-based football title scheduled for release in 2026. The game will feature team mascots such as Maple the Moose for Canada and Clutch the Eagle for the United States instead of professional players.

The arcade-style five-a-side game will allow players to build teams combining official mascots, fictional characters, and football personalities. FIFA Heroes will launch on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms. The game is being developed through a partnership between FIFA, Solace, and Enver Studios.

The release coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup. EA ended its FIFA licensing deal in 2022 after the organization requested $1 billion for naming rights. EA subsequently rebranded its football series as EA Sports FC, while FIFA pursued independent game development.
