Financial watchdog demotes Lyon to French second division over debt

French football officials sent Olympique Lyon down to the second division Tuesday after reviewing the club's troubled finances. The National Committee for Oversight and Financial Management made the decision that shocked fans across France. Lyon becomes one of the country's biggest teams to face such punishment. The committee reviewed documents and financial records before making their final choice. Officials gave Lyon the right to challenge the ruling through an appeal process.

Club president John Textor and football director Mickaël Gerlinger appeared before the committee hoping to avoid punishment. The committee used Article 11 of their rules to enforce the penalty against Lyon. Officials had already given the team a temporary relegation during the winter transfer window. Lyon failed to show they could meet required financial promises to league officials. The club owes creditors about 175 million euros according to financial reports.

Textor recently told reporters that Lyon had strong finances after new investments came to the club. The oversight committee disagreed with the president's claims about the team's money situation. They confirmed that Lyon must move down to France's second division next season. The decision puts the club's future operations and competitive standing at risk. Lyon faces serious challenges to return to top-level French football competition.
