First Lady Launches Zviperengo Cultural Quiz for Students.
Zimbabwe's First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, has launched a unique educational program. It's called the Zviperengo Cultural Quiz Programme. The program is for students in grades 5 to 7.
Dr. Mnangagwa is also the Patron of Culture and Heritage in the Ministry of Education. She wants the quiz to showcase local languages on a national level. This will help protect and preserve Zimbabwe's culture and heritage.
Students answered questions about proverbs, idioms, spellings, and riddles. They also translated English words into Shona. The children will also compete in a cooking contest, preparing traditional foods from their cultures.
The launch was held at the Heritage Village in Harare. Students from all types of neighborhoods attended, as Dr. Mnangagwa wanted to include everyone.
Some parents and children did not know about traditional tools and sayings. This shows how important the First Lady's program is.
Dr. Mnangagwa has been teaching children good values across the country. She said Zimbabwe has many languages, like Shona, Ndebele, and Tonga, each with its own history and wisdom.
"These languages are the lifeblood of our culture," she said. "We must pass them down to our children."
The quiz program will go to all 10 provinces. It will use the main languages in each region.
Dr. Mnangagwa said the program follows the spirit of "Ubuntu, " which means "I am because we are." She said it teaches that people are connected and do well when they support each other.
She told the students to learn about their heritage and be proud of their identity. "Remember that you are the future of Zimbabwe," she said.
The First Lady wants people to work together to preserve languages and traditions. She thanked the children for coming to learn from her. She said she loves them and expects a lot from them.
Dr. Mnangagwa said it is important to support children in learning their mother tongues. She noted that some schools do not encourage this. But she said children should learn English and their native languages.
