Five cops and pal get 10 days to rot in a cell

A Kenyan magistrate ordered six suspects to stay in police custody for 10 days after prosecutors argued their release could damage an investigation into illegal weapons possession. Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina said on Monday the state had satisfied legal requirements to hold the men, five of whom serve as police officers, at Capitol Hill Police Station until an Oct. 9 hearing. Authorities claim the group possessed ammunition without proper permits and conspired to commit crimes with firearms taken from two suspects' homes.

Police arrested Corporal Isaac Kipngetich on Sept. 25 after finding 1,007 rounds of ammunition in a backpack inside his Toyota Passo in Nairobi. Investigators believe the bullets were bound for criminal groups behind attacks in the North Rift region. Defense lawyers argued the detention violated constitutional protections, and one attorney said money found at a suspect's residence was earmarked for university tuition. Prosecutors countered that releasing the officers would allow them to tamper with evidence stored in armories.
