Five people signed up to run for office in the Glenview South special election on April 12. They all turned in their papers Thursday at the official Nomination Court in Harare. Court officer Fiona Kurima checked and approved every candidate who applied.
The approved candidates come from different political backgrounds. Three people decided to run without party support as independents: Chakeredza Tonderai, Tungamirai Madzokere, and George Makwangwaidze. The other two represent political parties: Perpetua Mukanda from the NCA party and Tsitsi Tawomhera from the ZANU PF party.
Kurima officially announced the upcoming vote. As required by electoral rules, voting day is Saturday, April 12. The special election became necessary because the previous representative passed away.
The seat opened up after Gladymore Hakata's recent death. He had represented the area as a member of the CCC party. Voters must pick someone new to fill this empty position in Zimbabwe's National Assembly. The election next month gives Glenview South residents a chance to choose their next representative.
