Fix FL Studio recordings that play from one speaker

FL Studio records Mixer inputs through stereo Mixer tracks, so selecting a stereo pair for one mono microphone can leave one channel silent. The recording may look like a stereo file, yet all useful audio sits on the left or right side because the second hardware input received nothing.

Open the Mixer, select the track receiving your microphone or instrument, and look at the Input menu near the top of the track. FL Studio separates paired stereo inputs from individual mono inputs in this menu, and the mono choices are the ones you want for a single mic, guitar, or other one-channel source. After changing it, make a short fresh recording before touching the pan knob or adding effects.

A centered result should now reach both speakers even though the physical source still enters through one interface socket. Run a controlled mono monitoring pass afterward if you want to check how the repaired recording behaves when the entire mix is summed.

The input choice causes the one-sided recording​

Suppose your microphone is connected to input 1 on a two-input interface. Selecting the stereo pair for inputs 1 and 2 tells FL Studio to treat input 1 as one side and input 2 as the other. Since nothing is connected to input 2, half of the recorded stereo signal contains silence.

Choose the mono version of input 1 instead. FL Studio then places that active hardware input into both left and right Mixer channels, so the signal sits in the center without needing a pan correction. If the instrument is plugged into input 2, choose the corresponding mono input instead of the paired stereo entry.

Do not reach for Stereo Separation first. Collapsing a wrongly recorded stereo pair can make the symptom disappear, but it leaves the recording setup wrong for the next take. Fixing the input selection prevents the problem at capture rather than repairing every clip after the fact.

Windows users should also check the audio driver when the expected inputs never appear. FL Studio exposes hardware recording inputs through an ASIO audio device on Windows, so a missing mono input list can point to the selected driver or device configuration rather than a Mixer panning problem.

Real stereo sources need two live channels​

A single microphone is normally one channel, but not every source should be forced through a mono input. Stereo keyboards, dual-mic rigs, stereo field recorders, and processors with separate left and right outputs can carry different information on each side. Pairing two live inputs is correct when the source genuinely has two channels.

Stereo is more than playing the same signal through two speakers. Independent channel information is the foundation of early two-channel sound recording systems, where differences between channels carry spatial information. Throwing one side away from a genuine stereo source can remove part of the recording rather than center it.

Check the hardware before deciding. If one cable leaves a mono microphone or guitar and enters one interface socket, choose one mono input. If two outputs from a stereo device feed two interface inputs, use the matching stereo pair and confirm both meters are active.

Dual microphones need another decision. Two microphones on the same guitar are two separate mono signals unless you deliberately want to record them as a fixed stereo pair. Recording them to separate Mixer tracks gives you independent level, pan, timing, and phase control later.

Existing one-sided takes can still be recovered​

A good performance does not need to be discarded because the wrong input pair was selected. Fruity Stereo Shaper includes LR to LL and LR to RR presets that can take the active left or right channel and feed it to both outputs. Choose the side that actually contains the recording.

This is different from guessing with the pan control. Panning a stereo file changes the balance of its two channels, while selecting the populated channel and feeding it to both outputs removes the silent side from the equation. Keep the original file untouched until you have confirmed which channel contains the wanted signal.

Edison also lets you set a sample to mono, but blindly merging channels is not always the cleanest repair. If one side contains only silence, noise, or unwanted bleed, isolate the useful channel first rather than assuming both sides deserve equal treatment. FL Studio can also export a mono file from the left channel only or right channel only when you need a true single-channel render.

Record another short test after fixing the Mixer input. Watch both Mixer meters, listen through both speakers, and reopen the recorded clip rather than trusting live monitoring alone. Once the new take is centered without corrective processing, the routing problem is actually gone.
