Flare at Kuala Lumpur rally prompts scuffle, injures officer

Police opened investigations after three people filed complaints about violence at a weekend demonstration. About 100 protesters gathered outside a shopping center on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman at 3:02 PM. The crowd later marched to Dataran Merdeka on Jalan Raja. District police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed the events happened Saturday afternoon. The demonstration caused safety concerns for nearby residents and businesses.

Someone set off a flare device around 4:30 PM during the protest march. Thick smoke filled the area and created health risks for demonstrators and bystanders. Officers tried to stop the dangerous situation from getting worse. Fighting broke out between protesters and law enforcement personnel at the scene. One police officer received minor wounds during the confrontation.

Authorities started formal investigations under Section 353 of the Penal Code. Officials also cited Section 3(5) and 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. The police chief warned citizens against spreading rumors about the incident. He said false information could harm the ongoing investigation process. People with details about the rally should contact Kuala Lumpur police at 03-2115 9999 or Dang Wangi headquarters at 03-2600 2222.
