Authorities arrested a fugitive in California more than ten years after he allegedly murdered his spouse in South Florida.
Ramone O'Neil Clayton, age 41, was taken into custody on October 27 by a joint law enforcement team consisting of the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Task Force, FBI agents and U.S. Marshals Service personnel. Police in Miami Gardens had sought Clayton since 2012 following the fatal shooting of Stephanie Ulette Clayton, his 35-year-old wife. The incident occurred on September 23 that year inside a residence located on Northwest 207th Street during a social event attended by multiple people who witnessed the attack. Clayton left the location in a car before officers arrived at the scene.
Investigators issued warrants charging him with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm during a felony. Despite consistent pursuit efforts by detectives and federal marshals over 13 years, he managed to avoid detection until a recent lead pointed investigators toward San Diego. He remains jailed without bail at the San Diego County facility while awaiting transfer to Florida. Authorities have not disclosed whether anyone assisted his flight or concealment.
