Anti-corruption officers arrested businessman Mohammed Daka at his Bulawayo home Thursday morning. He tried escaping over his wall wearing just underwear when police arrived at 4 AM. Officers caught him later that afternoon near the Botswana border. Daka faces fraud charges related to stealing a gold mine operation. He also broke his bail conditions during the escape attempt.
The businessman falsely claimed he owned Sheng AN Mining company and sold their expensive excavator. He took a machine worth 300,000 dollars and sold it for half the price. Daka worked at the mine before being fired in 2019. The operation belonged to a Chinese ambassador who died several years ago. His son took over but Daka scared him away and caused his deportation.
Daka created fake ownership documents claiming 52 percent of the mining business. He worked with corporate rescue expert Dumisani Dube to steal company property. The pair also falsely accused five other businessmen of crimes. All five men were cleared of charges in court. Business owner Wang complained to corruption investigators about the theft and fraud.
