Former MP Fuseini Criticizes Minority Leader's Conduct

Former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini has rebuked Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin for publicly criticizing an Appointments Committee clerk.

The conflict emerged after Afenyo-Markin led a press conference on February 3, 2025, demanding the clerk's removal over claims of partisan behavior. Fuseini called the Minority Leader's actions immature and inappropriate for a parliamentary leader.

"Afenyo-Markin allowed his emotions to overcome him. There are known procedures for parliament to deal with such situations. As a leader of the House, you should explore the possibility of amicably resolving an issue rather than letting your emotions take over. It doesn't show leadership and maturity. You did that with impunity, and in fact, I was disappointed," Fuseini said.

The former lawmaker explained that parliamentary staff operate under specific rules. He said Afenyo-Markin should have reported the clerk to her superiors for a proper investigation instead of launching public attacks.

"If you think that the Clerk of Parliament is behaving in a manifestly biased way towards your side, there are procedures to deal with that in parliament. The Clerk of Parliament is the head of the Parliamentary Service, and the clerk to the committee is a member of the Parliamentary Service," Fuseini stated.

The controversy started when the Minority Caucus accused the clerk of unprofessional conduct. At the press conference, Afenyo-Markin claimed she showed bias in favor of the Majority caucus.

"We have reported it to the clerk and we hope that the clerk, after engagement, will come back to us. But we don't want the clerk on the Appointments Committee again. We are calling on the clerk of parliament to remove her from the Appointments Committee unless she is ready to turn a new leaf and be a professional to engage us," Afenyo-Markin said.

The dispute adds another layer to recent tensions in Ghana's parliament, where procedural conflicts have intensified during ministerial vetting processes.
