Founding President Sam Nujoma Hospitalized in Windhoek

Former Namibian President Nujoma Hospitalized in Critical Condition.

Former President Sam Nujoma has entered a private hospital in Windhoek this week. Sources say senior government officials received reports about the critical state of Namibia's founding president.

Attempts to reach his physician, Dr Tshali Ithete, and his son, Utoni Nujoma, for comment were unsuccessful. This marks Nujoma's second hospital stay since July 2023.

The Office of the President thanked citizens for their support during his previous hospital stay. "He is recuperating very well," the office stated at that time.

President Nangolo Mbumba praised Nujoma at his 95th birthday celebration last year. He credited Nujoma with nurturing leaders like the late Hage Geingob, Moses //Garoëb, Theo-Ben Gurirab, and Hidipo Hamutenya.

"He led Namibia for 15 years and served as Swapo president from its start until handing over to Hifikepunye Pohamba," Mbumba said. He described Nujoma as a beloved father figure whose status has grown over time.

Mbumba celebrated Nujoma's longevity as a rare blessing. "At 95 years, he stands among those blessed with long life and health," he said. He praised Nujoma as a "pan-African luminary" with enduring leadership skills.

"He believed when others doubted, saw victory where others saw defeat, encouraged the downhearted, and stayed firm when others faltered," Mbumba said of the independence leader.
