Fourth fatal train accident in a month claims life at Chinhoyi station

A pedestrian wearing headphones died after a locomotive struck him at Chinhoyi Railway Station on Thursday afternoon. National Railways of Zimbabwe officials recorded the fatality at 4:06 PM, marking the fourth train death within 30 days. The unidentified victim had no identification documents at the time of the accident. Witnesses reported that the man appeared unable to hear the approaching train due to his audio devices. Railway authorities believe the headphones prevented him from detecting warning signals.

Three similar incidents claimed lives across Zimbabwe during recent weeks. A pedestrian died near Bulawayo's main station on July 1 while wearing earphones. Train operators discovered another victim lying unresponsive on the tracks at Odzi Siding in Mutare that same day. Peter Vengesayi from Zeederburg Village lost his life on June 20 after a locomotive struck him at Zvishavane. Railway officials expressed alarm over preventable deaths involving distracted pedestrians and motorists who ignore crossing signals.

National Railways has partnered with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Traffic Safety Council to develop community education programs targeting residents who treat railway corridors as recreational paths.
