Politician pushes for clinic upgrades after a free health insurance drive. The Assemblyman for Zorko-Gamboringo, Abiire Awineyesma, ran a five-day program in Gamboringo where locals signed up for the National Health Insurance Scheme for free. People could register new cards, renew old ones, or link their NHIS card to their Ghana Card. Awineyesma used a community meeting to demand major health upgrades for the area. He asked the Ghana Health Service and the local Catholic Diocese to turn the St. Theresa Health Center into a Polyclinic. He also requested an upgrade for the Gamboringo CHPS compound to a full Health Center, calling his community the most populated in Zorkor. He pushed the District Chief Executive, Joseph Akasake, and the District Health Director to speed up creating a local NHIS office so people would not have to travel to Bolgatanga or Bongo. Awineyesma finished by asking the John Mahama government to prioritize Zorkor for road and health projects under its Big Push plan.
The Bongo District Health Insurance Scheme manager, Anastasia Akologo Assibi, also spoke. She repeated a government goal for universal health coverage by 2030. Assibi told everyone to renew expired cards or join the scheme. She admitted the NHIS has had problems lately but said a reset is happening. This reset includes a big payment increase for doctors starting in 2026, which should stop fake extra fees. She also mentioned that a new biometric system is coming. This system will use a special code for each clinic visit to make billing more accurate. To make things easier, she reminded people to link their Ghana Card and use a mobile code, *929#, for renewals to avoid travel.
