Furious Ministry Denies Locking Out Old Folks

The Labour Ministry says news stories about older people being left out of the Inua Jamii money program are wrong. Mr. Joseph Motari from the Ministry explained this Monday.

"Inua Jamii gives money to people who are 70 years old or older," said Mr. Motari. "These people must not already receive money from the government. They need to have a Kenya ID card." The program helps older people, children without parents, and families taking care of people with big disabilities.

Mr. Motari made clear that anyone who already receives government pension money cannot join this program. This rule has always existed.

The government changed how people receive their money. Instead of banks, they use MPesa, which lets people get their money through their phones. People who do not have MPesa can sign up at any Safaricom shop or MPesa agent near their homes.

The old method required people to travel far to banks, which cost them money and time. The new method brings the money closer to people's homes. They can use MPesa agents right in their villages.

On February 13, 2025, the government sent money to almost two million families. Mr. Motari said 1.5 million people already used the new eCitizen MPesa system to collect their money in just one week. He called this change a big step forward in making government services work better for everyone.
