Furious Protest Shuts Torongo Girls Indefinitely

Kenyan School Closes After Students Protest Principal's Transfer.

A girls' school in Kenya closed on Tuesday after students marched to protest their principal's transfer. The students at Torongo Girls School walked 27 kilometers to education offices in Eldama Ravine.

The protest centered on Principal Christine Chepkole's transfer to Kaptagat Girls School. The students demanded she stay at Torongo.

Koibatek Education Director David Kipsang sent the students home, citing security concerns. He promised officials would address their concerns at an upcoming school board meeting.

The students conducted their protest peacefully, and no damage was reported at the school. Torongo Girls recently ranked second in academic performance across the sub-county, achieving a mean score of 7.46. Only Baringo High School scored higher.

The school board plans to discuss the matter before allowing students to return to classes.
