Galeries Lafayette opens its first Indian store in Mumbai

French department store Galeries Lafayette inaugurated its first Indian location in Mumbai, featuring 250 luxury and designer brands across five floors spanning 8,400 square meters. The venture operates through partnership with Aditya Birla Group's fashion division, though industry specialists caution that international labels face significant obstacles, including steep customs duties, bureaucratic complexity and competition from established domestic designers.

India's luxury sector reached $11 billion in valuation and analysts project growth to $35 billion within six years as thousands of millionaire households emerge annually. European fashion houses maintain a minimal presence compared with their Chinese operations, where brands operate hundreds of locations versus just one to three stores across India. Cultural preferences favor traditional garments, including kurtas and saris for ceremonial events, while many affluent consumers travel to Dubai, where identical products cost 40 percent less.

Trade experts indicate that forthcoming European Union agreements could reduce import barriers, though success requires adaptation to local tastes through collaborations with Bollywood personalities and regional influencers.
