Gambia boosts financial literacy for Nafa cash transfer recipients

Gambian welfare authorities have intensified business training sessions for recipients of the Nafa Cash Transfer scheme as the program approaches its conclusion after three years of bimonthly assistance. National Nutrition Agency field officers report that entrepreneurship and money management workshops now constitute essential preparation for families receiving D3000 payments across western and central districts.

Sainey Camara, nutrition field officer for Lower River Region, stated that financial education helps households transition away from direct aid dependency by teaching business registration procedures and revenue management techniques. The World Bank-backed RISE Project delivers these sessions at the family level to maximize participation and knowledge retention.

Field coordinator Fabakary Bass observed tangible improvements among participants who previously lacked small livestock or commercial ventures. Beneficiaries credit the combined cash assistance and skill development approach with enabling emergency savings capacity that formerly remained beyond reach.
