Gambia Celebrates 60th Independence with Infant Leaders

Kids from The Gambia nursery schools took over government roles at the 60th Independence Anniversary celebration. The National Association of Early Childhood Educators organized this special event where a young child acted as president instead of Adama Barrow. Little ones from different schools played the parts of every Cabinet minister during the celebration. Parents, teachers, and officials gathered at MacCarthy Square in Banjul on Thursday, including Health Minister Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, who attended the ceremony.

Alieu Saidy, the child president, talked about the many achievements made during the eight years since he became president. He pointed to real progress across the country, especially the new buildings and infrastructure projects visible everywhere. These improvements reach all sectors, regions, and communities throughout The Gambia. He stressed how important it is for citizens to value their national identity and protect their history and culture.

The young speaker explained that people must care about their social structures and relationships, plus everything else that makes them unique as Gambians. He said the government, Constitution, laws, public services, and national borders need to remain central to all activities. Without focusing on these elements, he warned that resources would go to waste, something everyone should work together to stop.

The child president highlighted that economic development depends on three key things. First, both human and material resources matter greatly. Second, the amount and intensity of what people produce affects everything. Third, creativity drives positive changes, proper actions, and maximum use of goods and services. He emphasized that no country can succeed without people actively working together toward these goals.
