Gambia COVID Waste Nightmare Unfolds

The Gambia hosts a three-day workshop on medical waste management at Kalimba Tamala Resort. Six West African countries send teams to learn better waste handling methods. The West African Health Organization runs the event with African Development Bank money. Ambassador Miatta Lily French opens the meeting for ECOWAS. The workshop focuses on COVID-19 waste challenges from June 10 to 12.

COVID-19 created huge amounts of dangerous medical trash across the region. Hospitals threw away millions of masks, test kits, and needles during the pandemic. French says health workers and communities face serious risks from bad waste disposal. The pandemic showed major gaps where countries need stronger waste systems. Medical centers must stay safe places for healing patients.

French calls the workshop important for building regional teamwork on waste problems. Countries can share their experiences and learn from each other. The training gives national teams new tools and knowledge for managing medical waste safely. Strong laws and money support help countries build better waste systems. Public and private groups must work together on waste solutions.

Dr. Momodou Nyassi speaks for Gambia's Health Ministry at the workshop opening. He welcomes visitors from other West African nations to the training event. Nyassi says medical waste grew more complex during the health crisis. The workshop helps countries develop practices that work across the region. Partners and sponsors make the important training meeting possible.
