Gambia hosts UN water workshop, admits it lacks funding, capacity

The Gambia launched a three-day workshop on August 5, 2025, targeting Sustainable Development Goal 6 achievements. UN DESA, UNESCO, and development partners joined the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources, and National Assembly Matters for this capacity-building event. The Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo hosted the gathering. Minister Musa S Drammeh delivered the opening address while emphasizing water resources. Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh from the Health Ministry highlighted national sanitation progress.

The initiative addresses persistent water quality and sanitation challenges across the nation. Population growth and climate pressures require stronger institutional frameworks and increased funding. Regional cooperation efforts with neighboring countries demonstrate a shared commitment to water resource management. The Health Ministry's Watch Programme with UNICEF has constructed numerous sanitation facilities nationwide. Workshop organizers structured sessions around governance capacity building and service delivery improvements for universal water access.
