Gambia police ramp up coastal ops to stop migrant smuggling

Cops are swarming a beach to stop migrant boats. Gambian police launched a big joint operation along the Jinack coastal area. They want to prevent dangerous sea crossings and break up smuggling networks. Multiple security agencies teamed up for this intelligence-driven mission.

Forces included immigration, state intelligence, and drug enforcement. The navy and a police intervention unit also joined the raid. They focused on shoreline surveillance and checking canoe movements. Officers also monitored routes used by people facilitating irregular migration.

The operation seized ten unregistered motorcycles called Jakartas. Police believe these bikes are connected to smuggling activities. They detained the riders for further questioning and verification. The raid targeted specific villages and offshore points known for this trade.

Authorities met with local leaders and residents during the operation. They stressed how important community help is for stopping these journeys. Police say community support is key to preventing loss of life. The statement called the dangerous crossings a national security issue.

The police force promised continued patrols and community engagement. They reaffirmed their commitment to regional collaboration on this problem. The goal remains dismantling the networks that organize these trips. The operation is part of ongoing efforts along that coastal corridor.
