Gambia stakeholders review Disability Act 2021

Disability advocates and government officials gathered at the Gambia Organisation for the Visually Impaired Resource Centre to assess the enforcement of legislation enacted to protect individuals with disabilities. Principal Social Welfare Officer Modou Suwareh reported that authorities distributed funds totaling 4 million dalasis to organizations supporting disabled persons and plan matching allocations for eligible groups this year.

Senior State Counsel Fatoumatta Drammeh noted that the statute followed ratification of an international convention protecting vulnerable populations and ensures equal treatment across employment and access sectors. National Advisory Council Chairman Muhammed Krubally emphasized sustained cooperation between agencies, while Acting Executive Director Sainey Camara disclosed that only a small fraction of disabled students finish elementary education.

Officials announced that a comprehensive nationwide survey will examine disability prevalence with backing from international financial institutions. Speakers highlighted ongoing facility improvements at medical centers and the upcoming launch of a permanent administrative office in the capital.
