Ocean Bay Hotel hosted a special training event that started on Monday morning. The West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project organized a five-day workshop for local officials. Muhammad Lamin Sanyang coordinates the WACA project activities across Gambia. Sixty people came from government offices, schools, and community groups to learn new skills. The training teaches people how to use natural methods to protect cities from flooding and soil damage.
Nature-based solutions help communities combat river flooding and coastal erosion issues. Participants learn to design and build projects that work in harmony with the environment, rather than against it. The program shows officials how to plan infrastructure that uses natural systems for protection. Teachers from universities and international organizations lead the educational sessions throughout the week. Government workers and representatives from private companies attend classes together.
Mariama Ndow Jarju from the Ministry of Environment spoke about government support for the coastal protection project. She said the training aligns with national plans to combat climate change nationwide. Two international experts have praised The Gambia for its efforts to protect its coastline from damage. Liliane Assogba Sessou from the Conservation Union and Manon Cassara from the World Bank both attended the opening ceremony. Community leaders and technical specialists will disseminate the new knowledge to their local areas.
