A government department reviewed its ongoing partnership with UNICEF this week. The Department of Strategic Policy and Delivery held its annual year-end assessment of the UNICEF Gambia Country Programme at a hotel in Kotu. Deputy Chief of Staff Momodou Dibba, representing the head of the civil service, stated that the meeting evaluated this year's progress and set future priorities.
Dibba noted collaboration will continue under the existing U.N. development framework, which aligns with the national Yiriwa plan. He identified health, education, nutrition, and child protection as key government focus areas for socioeconomic growth. The review aimed to share implementation updates and bolster cooperation to meet the programme's goals.
UNICEF representative Nafisa Binte Shafique marked the agency's sixty-year partnership with The Gambia. She called for a coordinated, multisectoral strategy that ensures equity and inclusion. Shafique listed several 2025 accomplishments, such as backing the Children’s National Assembly and a national summit for adolescent girls. She also cited the formation of an Inter-Religious Committee on child rights and the country's recent review by the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child.
Shafique praised the Gambian government's coordination efforts through the DSPD. She concluded with a call to build a future where every child in the country can survive and thrive.
