Gambian coalition demands 2020 draft constitution revival

A Gambian coalition is demanding the revival of an old constitution draft, which they claim protects democracy. The Coalition of Progressive Gambians called for the reinstatement of the 2020 draft constitution, urging the government review and adopt it. Spokespersons made the declaration during a Westfield Monument press briefing, emphasizing constitutional governance and accountability. Technical Adviser Dodou Ndow stated that their advocacy safeguards citizen rights and strengthens democratic institutions.

Secretary Celestine Kujabi reiterated their push to hold officials accountable, stressing the need for transparency. He listed nine unaddressed public demands, highlighting the revival of the 2020 draft as essential for independent institutions and checks on power. Kujabi rejected a later draft, arguing it threatens democratic governance. The coalition is also challenging specific clauses in a recent amendment bill at the Supreme Court.

They fear those provisions could let the president pardon individuals implicated in a major crime. Kujabi addressed youth migration as a severe national loss of human capital. Media coordinator Alex Bass outlined core demands, stating sovereignty rests with the people, not political parties. He called for an independent constitutional reform process with clear timelines and published roadmaps.

The coalition insists on protecting presidential term limits and enforcing zero tolerance for corruption with actual consequences. They plan continued peaceful protests, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy for people-centered reforms targeting democracy and accountability.
